Information for a holder of passport
09/03/2010

Estonian citizen passport is, above all, a travelling document, and also an identity document. Passports are issued by Citizenship and Migration Department of Prefecture.

Passport is necessary, above all, if you travel outside the European Union. Everyday identity document is an ID-card, which enables to travel to member states of European Union and European Economic Area (EEA).

Since May 22, 2007 the Republic of Estonia has been issuing biometric Estonian citizen passports, onto the chip whereof the holder's biometric data is entered. All previous versions of Estonian citizen passport remain valid until the date of expiry.

You can find instructions for biometric passport here.

Holder of document is obliged to inform the Citizenship and Migration Service Office of Prefecture or foreign mission of the Republic of Estonia about the change of personal data within 1 month, to deem the previous document to be invalid and submit an application for a new document if necessary.

If a document becomes ineligible for use, is lost or destructed, then the holder of document or his/her legal representative must request the Citizenship and Migration Service Office of Prefecture to declare the document invalid as soon as possible. It is impossible to declare the document invalid through telephone call.
