Important points to remember for document users

Safekeeping documents

  • Do not give your document to anyone else.
  • Do not bend or twist the document.
  • Avoid the document coming into contact with sharp or metal objects (keys, coins etc.).
  • Safeguard the document from sudden fluctuation in temperature, moisture, extended exposure to direct sunlight, chemicals and chemical vapours.

Electronic use of a document

  • Both the travel document and ID card have a chip. This holds personal information, including facial and fingerprint images (except Digital ID).
  • There are two certificates connected to the ID card, which can be used in electronic environments, if you know the security codes. The Terms of Use for certificates are available at https://www.id.ee/en/article/compete-information-about-the-terms-of-use-of-certificates/.
  • Security codes can be found in the security code envelope.
  • PIN1 is for identification on e-environments. This can be used to securely log in to e-services and decrypt files.
  • PIN2 is for digital signature. A digital signature is equal to a handwritten signature.
  • PUK allows one to replace the PIN codes forgotten or blocked in the ID software.
  • Keep the security codes in secret and separate from the document. If possible, memorise your PIN codes.
  • Install the latest ID software on your computer. Download it from www.id.ee/en/.
  • You need an ID card reader to use it on an e-environment. Information about supported ID card readers is available at www.id.ee/en/.
  • To ensure the functionality of the ID card, only keep it in the reader for the necessary operations.
  • Download updates recommended by your computer’s operating system, security software, web browser and software.
