20 000 Estonians have applied for the ID-card online

More than 20 000 Estonian citizens have used the new online application environment to apply for the new ID-card during the last eight months.

Online application environment was launched in June 2017 and it has been used by 20 190 Estonian citizens.

„ Every fifth ID-card is applied for online. More and more people use our online application environment, because it is easy, simple and convenient,“ said Marit Abram, Chief Expert of Identity and Status Bureau. „Most fields on the application form have already been pre-filled and the applicant only needs to upload a correct document photo. Requirements to a photo can be found on online application environment or Police and Border Guard Board homepage.”

Online application environment is used by people of different ages. More than third of the 18 710 ID-cards applied for online in 2017 were issued to people aged 25-44. People aged over 70 applied for 1500 ID-cards.

“Our pensioners are quite active Internet users. Also, younger family members help the elders to apply for the ID-cards,” added Abram. “After applying for the ID-card online, you need to visit the service offices only to receive your ID-card.”

To receive the identity document, it is recommended to book a time on Police and Border Guard Board webpage.

Police and Border Guard Board continues to develop its e-service. Next development will be for foreigners to register short-term employment in Estonia.
