Ukrainian police chiefs passed training in Estonia
Another group of Ukrainian police chiefs passed a week-long training aimed at increasing the management capabilities of the Ukrainian police. The training programme of the Police and Border Guard Board and ESTDEV will bring more than 80 trainees to Estonia within two years.
The East Prefect Tarvo Kruup said that the trainings were structured in such a way that they would support as much as possible the efforts of the Ukrainian police to build a strong and modern police force. “We have a similar history with the Ukrainian police, and they are currently striving to the European Union. When creating the training programme, we thought about what would have helped us the most in the same phase, i.e. in the modernisation of the Estonian police. At that time, we received support from many countries, and we want to do the same for Ukraine. We do not teach, but we share our experiences, and Ukrainian colleagues take what they see and hear back home. It is in the power of every person who has passed the training to bring out a change in his or her own unit through small or large actions. The longer objective of the programme is to introduce modern management in the Ukrainian police in order to develop the Ukrainian police as a whole," said Kruup.
The training is carried out by persons of the Police and Border Guard Board. It took place in South-Estonia and lasted for a week. As part of the programme, the police chiefs received an overview of the re-establishment of the Estonian Police, management reforms and modern management principles, organisational culture, internal control and developments. The programme is aimed at middle and senior-ranking Ukrainian Police chiefs.
A total of 14 persons participated in the training. From Ukraine, they came to Estonia from the regions of Mykolajiv, Odesa, Poltava, Rivne and Cherkassy, as well as from the capital.
The project brings six study groups to Estonia, i.e. a total of 84 persons. There will be three more study groups coming to Estonia in the near future. The project takes place for the second time, and 34 Ukrainian police officers passed similar training during the previous project.
The project “European Path: enhancing leadership capacity and cooperation in the Ukrainian police” is financed by the Estonian Centre for International Development ESTDEV.
