Schengen border control

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Purpose

The Entry/Exit System (EES) improves the management of external borders, prevents illegal immigration and facilitates the management of migration flows. The EES digitally records the entry, exit and refusal of entry data of third-country nationals entering and exiting the Schengen area.

Estonia uses the EES system, and the Police and Border Guard Board is responsible for this.

Data

The EES information system shall collect, save and store:

  • data listed in the travel document (e.g. full name, date of birth, etc.);
  • the date and place of each arrival and departure;
  • facial image and fingerprints (biometric data);
  • information on whether you have been refused entry.

Access

In Estonia, the Police and Border Guard Board, the Tax and Customs Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Estonian Internal Security Service are the authorities responsible for entering data into the EES, amending and deleting them and making queries. This data is processed in the EES Central System.

Data retention period

The data shall be stored in the EES Central System for three years after the date of the exit record or refusal of entry.
