Marking of border
It is a violation of the border regime to be in the immediate vicinity of an Estonian state border post.
When travelling in the vicinity of the state border, follow signs and markings around you and be sure you are not in violation of law and that your safety is guaranteed.
On land:
- The police have the right to restrict movement and stay of persons in areas close to the border.
- The police have the right to perform checks of personal documents in the vicinity of the state border, and if necessary to take the person to a station facility
- The immediate vicinity of the border strip is marked with warning markings that denote the border regime. It is prohibited to cross them or be in the immediate vicinity of a border post.
- Whenever border checks are re-established on the internal border (e.g. the Estonian-Latvian state border, the requirements on crossing the external border come into effect (see Section 11 3 of the State Borders Act)
Marking of the border on land
On transboundary bodies of waterMovement of watercraft on the River Narva and the Mouth of the River Narva from Lake Peipus, as well as from Lake Lämmijärv to Lake Pskov, is allowed only along the main shipping lane. Watercraft may approach the external border (i.e. state border) at the following distances:
- upon to 200 metres on Lake Peipus
- up to 50 metres on the Narva Reservoir, Lake Lämmijärv and Lake Pskov and
- up to 20 metres on lakes Vaniku, Pattina, Kriiva and Pabra
Fishing and being on the ice is allowed at the following distances from the state border
- up to 20 metres on River Narva, and lakes Vaniku, Pattina, Kriiva and Pabra
- up to 50 metres on the Narva Reservoir, Lake Lämmijärv and Lake Pskov and
- upon to 200 metres on Narva Bay and Lake Peipus
It is prohibited to access the dry bed of the River Narva from the reservoir dam to the railway bridge
It is prohibited to access, without a police permit, the River Narva, Narva Reservoir, lakes Vaniku, Pattina, Kriiva and Pabra and the small island therein from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise
Register all travel on transboundary bodies of water in advance at the nearest border guard station, ask for more information and notify when you return from the body of water
When going or returning from more than one kilometre from shore on Lake Peipus or its ice, registration at the border guard station is required
