What to do if your car is towed away

In Tallinn, as well as Harju, Lääne and Rapla County, vehicles are usually towed to the Police and Border Guard Board’s car park at Rahumäe tee 6/1, Tallinn. The car park is open on working days from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Friday from 10:00 to 15:00, phone numbers 612 5846, 53 483 654.

In Pärnu County, vehicles are usually towed to the Police and Border Guard Board’s car park at A.H.Tammsaare pst 70 in Pärnu. The car park releases vehicles on working days from 13:30 to 15:30, phone numbers 444 6412, 51 948 988.

In Saare County (incl. the island of Muhu), vehicles are usually towed to the Police and Border Guard Board’s car park at Roomassaare tee 1C, Kuressaare. The car park is open on working days from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Friday from 10:00 to 15:00, phone numbers 454 9718, 514 1132.

If the vehicle was towed away in a county other than those mentioned above, or if contacting the car park reveals that the vehicle is not in the car park, you should send a digitally signed request to ... or to the nearest police station.

Please note that information will only be issued to a person who meets at least one of the following conditions:

  • He/she is the owner or user of the vehicle according to the Traffic Register
  • He/she is authorised to use the vehicle
  • He/she has a contract of sale or purchase confirming the acquisition of the vehicle

A digitally signed request must contain the following information:

  • Time when the vehicle was towed;
  • Location where the vehicle was towed from;
  • Make of the vehicle;
  • Relation to the vehicle. If the vehicle is not recorded in the Traffic Register, documents confirming ownership or possession must be attached.

The costs of transporting the vehicle to a police car park must be covered in advance for the vehicle to be released. We ask you to bring the relevant payment order or its printout when you come to recover your car. If your vehicle was towed to the car park at Rahumäe tee 6/1, the payment order can also be sent to ....

The car park at Rahumäe tee 6/1 is the only one where you can pay for towing costs on site. Only card payments are accepted!

The vehicle shall be released on presentation of an identity document to a person who meets at least one of the following conditions:

  • He/she is the owner or user of the vehicle according to the Traffic Register
  • He/she is authorised to use the vehicle
  • He/she has a contract of sale or purchase confirming the acquisition of the vehicle

Pursuant to the Traffic Act, the driver, owner or possessor of the vehicle shall compensate the costs of transporting the vehicle to a guarded storage facility or police authority and the costs of storing and guarding the vehicle. If the driver, owner or possessor of the vehicle is not guilty of an offence, he/she is exempted from the reimbursement of the costs.

The costs of transporting a vehicle to a guarded storage facility or police authority and the costs of storing and guarding the vehicle there and the reimbursement arrangements have been established by the following Regulation of the Government of the Republic: https://www.riigiteataja.ee/akt/108022022009.

If the vehicle has been towed to a private car park, the costs of towing and storage must be paid to the company that towed the vehicle.
